Djellaba: Morocco’s Iconic Traditional Robe

The Djellaba is a traditional Moroccan robe known for its graceful silhouette, flowing lines, and deep cultural roots. Worn by both men and women, the Djellaba is more than just a piece of clothing — it is a symbol of Moroccan identity, modesty, and craftsmanship.

Crafted from a variety of fabrics such as wool, cotton, or luxurious silk blends, the Djellaba adapts beautifully to Morocco’s diverse climate — from the snowy peaks of the Atlas Mountains to the warmth of the Sahara. It features a long, loose-fitting design with full sleeves and a distinctive pointed hood (called a “qob”) which historically served both functional and aesthetic purposes, protecting the wearer from sun, sand, or cold.

For women, Djellabas often feature elegant embroidery delicate patterns, and vibrant colors that reflect Morocco’s rich artistic heritage. Men’s Djellabas tend to come in more muted tones, often in wool during winter months. Traditionally, they are worn with leather slippers called babouches completing a look that is both practical and refined.

The Djellaba is worn for everyday life, religious occasions, and celebrations such as Eid, weddings, and family gatherings embodying the values of tradition, elegance, and dignity. In recent years, modern designers have re imagined the Djellaba, blending contemporary fashion with ancestral artistry, ensuring that this iconic garment continues to thrive across generations.
